6th February Weekly Report

The ADAFL League Cup third round draw was finalised at the weekend as four sides from Division One and two from Division Two advanced from the second round. AFC Quarry, Old Alts, Salford AFC and Sale Amateurs joined fellow top flight outfits Sale Rovers and Heatonmoor Phoenix in the last eight, while AFC Partington and Trafford United maintained second tier interest in the competition. In a hard fought, fast paced game, the Division One league leaders AFC Quarry overcame the Division Two table toppers Wilmslow Sports by two goals to one, thanks to strikes from Dugmore and Hayes either side of half time. They now face a trip to AFC Partington later on this month after they came out 3-5 winners at Egerton FC. Like Quarry, Old Alts scraped through against lower league opposition beating Northenden Victoria 2-3 on their travels and they now go up against Sale Amateurs who won 1-3 at Old York 06. Salford AFC set up a trip to the already qualified Heatonmoor Phoenix as a brace from new signing Shun Hamaoka and a goal for Daniel Jones fired them to a comfortable 3-0 victory against Wythenshawe Town. Trafford United’s 4-3 win over Irlam FC means that they will host Sale Rovers who received a second round bye.

Meanwhile in Division One, Cringlewood Athletic moved to within two points of second placed Old Alts after a narrow 2-3 win at the bottom side Styal FC. Elsewhere, Atlantic FC took advantage of Salford’s cup commitments and moved above them into fourth spot with a 4-1 victory over Knutsford FC. Sale Rovers also leapfrogged them as goals from Jack Lockett, Tom Parsons and Andrew Meadows gave them a comfortable 3-0 victory over Heatonmoor Phoenix. In Division Two, second placed Lounge About FC claimed their fourth consecutive league win by thrashing Timperley Wanderers 7-2 and consequently closed the gap on the leaders Wilmslow Sports to just three points, albeit having played two games more than the pacesetters. In the one other game played, Brooklands FC brought an end to Unicorn Athletic’s three match winning streak in the league, as they came out 1-3 winners on the road.
